Four Levels of Knowledge Management
When discussing what KM is encompassing it helps to take this schema based on David Gurtneen's discussion. SKMF has adapted his model to emphasize the leadership element which is decisive on the implementation of each of the first three levels.
SKMF has compiled a series of procedures, methods and tools for each of these four levels.
1. The first level is information management, which includes LLMs, AI etc. as well
(and for many organizations this is all there is to knowledge management)
2. Knowledge sharing, knowledge transfer and access to experts
3. Creating purpose, decision-making & innovation, creativity
4. Leadership and management support, without which the top three levels cannot be successfully implemented.
This model has proven usefull together with the 3 Sphere Model when discussing the steps an organization should consider in her journey towads KM excellence.
As a SKMF member you can download the slide in English, German and French.
more3 Sphere Model
We have introduced the new 3 Sphere Model for Knowledge Management at the SKMF roundtable at EPFL Lausanne in November 2017. It is based on work done at EPFL by Gil Regev and through AHT by Pavel Kraus.
In March 2021 an updated version of the 3 Sphere Model has been published in the curated dossier «Wissensmanagement quo vadis?» Part 2. of GfWM. (in German). A smaller update was done in March 2022. Download PDF of the model.
In December 2021, we have updated the description for our members, that illustrates the application of the model in practice and in education. (Login required for access)
In June 2022, the model was expanded to illustrate a common dilemma in knowledge management. Both the old and new models were merged into one image. Two new axes were added. This model will be presented for the first time at the ICKM conference in Potsdam on June 23.

SKMF is currently applying the various topics of ISO 30401 in the various roundtables.
For examples the topics of Knowledge transformations (4.6) and Knowledge management enablers (4.7) are discussed at our roundtable in Bern that deals with Communities of Practice.
